THE LIST: MORNING BEAUTY’S TOP 10 CLEANSING BALMS/CREAMS

Cleansing is the foundation of a good and bright skin. It really doesn’t matter if you apply makeup on a daily basis or not as your skin is going to be filled with impurities even if you only use colour-free moisturisers or sunscreens. Dirt, smoke, grime, and sweat, as soon as you leave home – and sometimes even at home – you get in contact with residues that block your pores, which later might cause acne, inflammation, blackheads and dark spots.

I have always been very disciplined with my cleansing routine – I never sleep with makeup, and it doesn’t matter how tired I am –, but washing my face feel so pleasantly indulging since I started using cleansing balms. Different of applying oil or watery lotions, to use a cleansing balm requires time and patience, and it is indeed quite an investment as it normally involves massaging the product until it melts and then removing it with a cloth.

Nonetheless, the minutes spent are worth it: the cleansing balms, which commonly are creamy or pasty, don’t dry the skin or extract its natural oils, and also leave the face moisturized. The products currently available on the market are often made with a blend of plant-based and essential oils, as well as beeswax and/or Shea butter. Although they can be used alone, it is recommended the use of a toner and a night oil or cream afterwards.

Check on the gallery below Morning Beauty’s Top 10 Cleansing Balms:

  • Aurelia Probiotic Skincare’s Miracle Cleanser (£34) is indeed miraculous. It smells amazing, as it’s made with shea and cocoa butter, hibiscus flower extract and a blend of bergamot, chamomile, rosemary, and eucalyptus essential oils. It also contains high levels of probiotics and peptides, which helps stimulate the skin’s natural renewal process, letting the complexion smoother and brighter. Its creamy texture makes it easy to apply the product over the whole face without squeezing it too much, while the bamboo muslin cloth wipes it over very gently. This dazzling formula does not contain artificial fragrances, artificial colours, sulfates, parabens or mineral oils. ©Aurelia Probiotic SkincareAurelia Probiotic Skincare’s Miracle Cleanser (£34) is indeed miraculous. • The Fabulous Makeup Melt Gel-to-Oil Cleanser (£24), by Bliss, has a gel texture that melts into oil after a brief facial massage, and it removes makeup very well – warming
your hands before applying it makes the product melts even faster. This cleanser is
manufactured with Lavender, Sage, Orange, Abyssinica and Tamanu essential oils, as well as Milk Thistle, and it doesn't contain artificial fragrances or colours, sulfates, phthalates or parabens. • Elemis' Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm (£39.50) has a strong scent and is quite thick, but very effective as it dissolves makeup really well. According to the brand, this product is
made with “a 100% active base of natural oils grown within the UK”. These mentioned
oils are mainly extracted from starflower and elderberry, and combined with rose and mimosa waxes. The Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm is suited for all skin types and it also
can be used as a mask; it needs to be removed with a cloth ©ElemisElemis' Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm (£39.50) has a strong scent and is quite thick, but very effective as it dissolves makeup really well. • Applying Emma Hardie's Moringa Cleansing Balm (£36) feels like applying an amazing orange-scented melted butter into the face. It removes all traces of makeup, and it's so silky and luxurious. Its formula brings grape seed and sweet almond oils, rich in
essential fatty acids, moringa seed extract, and orange, neroli and mandarin essential
oils, which revitalize and calm the skin. The muslin cloth that comes with the product has an abrasive side and a smoother microfibre side: the first is for gentle exfoliation,
whereas the latter is for polishing ©Emma HardieApplying Emma Hardie's Moringa Cleansing Balm (£36) feels like applying an amazing orange-scented melted butter into the face. • Launched over 20 years ago, Eve Lom's Cleansing Balm (£55 for 100ml) was the first of its kind. I've read that many people feel its scent as very medicinal, but for me it remembers the smell of a traditional Brazilian sweet made with coconut that I really enjoy it. This cleanser is made with a blend of chamomile, clove, hops and eucalyptus oils and cocoa seed butter; it has, however, mineral oil on its formula, which can be an issue for people with sensitive skin. Apart from removing makeup and traces of dirt very well, it also gives a gentle exfoliation, eliminating dead skin cells and decongesting the pores. As Eve Lom's Cleansing Balm has a luxurious thick texture, it's recommended to
use a spatula to extract the product from its packaging and a muslin cloth to rinse it off ©Eve LomLaunched over 20 years ago, Eve Lom's Cleansing Balm (£55 for 100ml) was the first of its kind. • The Wild Rose Balm (£38), by Neal's Yard Remedies, smells so good and applying it
is truly indulgent. Its texture is quite thick, but it melts easily after a quick facial massage.
The amazing scent, as I mentioned, is due to a combination of beeswax, shea butter,
and rosehip, geranium, jojoba, starflower, hemp, frankincense and rosemary essential
oils. This product cleanses the skin completely, and also exfoliates and moisturizers the
complexion. It comes with a muslin cloth, and I'd suggest to use a spatula to get the

  • Merumaya's Cleansing Balm (£15.50) is quite similar to Bliss' Fabulous Makeup Melt
Gel-to-Oil Cleanser in texture, but it's even easier to melt and has a subtle scent, whereas the latter is odorless. With mangosteen fruit extract, and sweet almond and echium oil in its formula, this cleanser is really, really good, and it has an awesome price. • Black. Omorovicza's Thermal Cleansing Balm (£46) is, quite oddly, black as its formula combines Hungarian mud, beeswax, plum seed extract, and  sweet almond, jojoba and apricot kernel essential oils. The water used to manufacture this cleanser, according to Omorovicza, is Hungarian thermal water. As its texture is buttery, it melts very easily, and its scent is not too strong. It almost feels like using grease in the face, which is a pretty amusing experience. Apart from its interesting appearance, it removes makeup very well and, when applied in a generous amount, even eliminates waterproof mascaras residues ©OmoroviczaBlack. • Pai's Camellia & Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser (£38) is calming, reparative and very moisturizing. Its alcohol-free and rosacea friendly formula is creamy and removes makeup completely, leaving behind a hydrated and smoother skin. It comes alongside a
muslin cloth, which helps to exfoliate the complexion, and is suitable for any skin types (in addition, by the way, it can be applied around the eyes to take out waterproof mascaras). Pai's cleanser is made with a blend of camellia, damask rose, sweet almond, geranium, and lavender essential oils, it also contains tocopherol (Vitamin E),
shea butter and lactic acid as well ©PaiPai's Camellia & Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser (£38) is calming, reparative and very moisturizing. • Japanese brand RMK's Cleansing Balm (£29) is almost colourless and odorless, and it's
pretty effective as it removes makeup very quickly. Its texture is quite buttery, which is
great because then the product melts effortlessly. Manufactured with avocado and grape
seed oils, this cleanser also contains, nonetheless, synthetic wax and fragrance, and paraffin (mineral oil), which, again, can be an issue for those with sensitive skin. Its
packaging – minimalistically gorgeous – brings a spatula, and the use of a muslin cloth is optional ©RMKJapanese brand RMK's Cleansing Balm (£29) is almost colourless and odorless, and it's pretty effective as it removes makeup very quickly.
